Orange County rarely has one offshore number that describes every break. This guide uses the NOAA/NDBC buoy pairs selected for the Killer Surf Links Surfability Score™ pilot to turn a regional signal into better questions before you drive to the beach.
NOAA/NDBC ↗ buoys report offshore conditions at the instrument: wave height, dominant period, direction and, when available, wind and water temperature. They are evidence of the incoming sea state, not a promise of the wave height or quality at a specific beach.
For Orange County, the useful first question is not ‘How big is Huntington or Trestles?’ It is ‘What is the offshore signal doing, how recent is it, and do the two reference buoys agree?’ Local wind, tide, sandbars, kelp, headlands and crowd conditions still decide what happens at the break.
Huntington Beach and Newport Beach use 46222 as primary and 46253 as secondary. Salt Creek and Strands use 46222 with 46277. Doheny uses 46285 with 46277; San Clemente reverses that pair; and Trestles uses 46277 with 46224.
A primary/secondary pair is more informative than a single station because agreement can increase confidence in the regional pattern, while disagreement tells you to slow down and inspect timing, direction, exposure and local conditions. It does not create a universal conversion from buoy feet to breaking-wave feet.
First, check the observation time on both stations. A clean-looking value is not current conditions if the reading is old. Second, read height, period and direction together; period and direction help explain whether similar heights may behave differently at the coast.
Third, compare the two stations rather than picking the larger number. Are height and period broadly similar? Is one station showing a newer or differently directed signal? Fourth, check local wind and tide for the break you plan to surf. Finally, look at the beach or a reliable local observation and consult official marine warnings before entering the water.
If both reference buoys show a recent, similar signal, treat that as stronger regional context—not a guarantee. If they disagree, the difference may be useful: it can reflect a changing swell, station location, measurement timing or how energy is distributed offshore. In either case, avoid reducing the decision to one height value.
