The useful question is not whether a number looks good. It is whether the source, timing and surrounding evidence make that number useful for the decision in front of you.
A real buoy or station is an observation at the instrument's location. A marine model is an estimate for a geographic grid point. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions and should never be treated as interchangeable.
Start by reading the source label. If it is a physical observation, ask how well that station represents the offshore signal for your coast. If it is a model, treat it as regional context and look for an observation or local check to support it.
A value without its time is incomplete. Conditions can change faster than a provider updates, especially when wind shifts or a new swell arrives. Compare the timestamp with the time you plan to surf, not just with the clock on your phone.
If two readings are from different update windows, do not compare the numbers as if they were simultaneous. A delayed reading can still provide background context, but it should lower confidence in a current session call.
Height, period, direction and wind should tell a coherent story. A change in one variable may be real, but it is a reason to investigate rather than to select the most favorable value. Compare a nearby source, the previous update and the likely weather pattern when possible.
Agreement between independent sources can strengthen a regional interpretation. Disagreement is also useful: it may show different exposure, timing, source type or a rapidly changing sea state. It is a prompt to slow down, not an error to ignore.
No offshore reading knows the exact state of your sandbars, reef, tide, wind texture, current or crowd. Add a current visual observation, a reliable local report and official marine warnings before deciding to enter the water.
When the data and the beach disagree, give the local observation weight. The goal is not to prove the reading right; it is to make a safer and more informed decision.
If the source is unclear, the reading is old, key variables are missing or local conditions look different, choose a conservative plan. More tabs and more numbers do not automatically create confidence.
