Swell is the language of the ocean. Once you understand height, period, and direction, the forecast starts to make sense.
Swell is ocean energy traveling across the sea. It is usually generated by storms far away from the coast. By the time it reaches your beach, it may have traveled hundreds or even thousands of miles.
How much energy is moving through the water. Bigger is not always better.
The time between waves. Longer period often means more powerful and organized surf.
Where the swell is coming from. Direction decides which beaches and points receive the energy.
A forecast that says 3 ft @ 17s from SW does not mean the same thing as 3 ft @ 8s from W.
Shorter period. Less organized. Usually weaker.
Longer period. More energy. Better potential.

Start with height, but never use it alone. Ask which period accompanies it, where the energy is coming from, and whether that angle can reach your coast. A 3 ft swell at 16 seconds may carry more organized energy than a 4 ft swell at 8 seconds, but it will not automatically be better at a sheltered beach.
Then check the timestamp and source. A physical buoy describes a measurement at one location; a model describes a regional estimate. Both can be useful, but they should not be presented as the same kind of observation.
Height + period + direction describe the energy that is present.
